Our Mission

Death Over Dim Sum is a duo based in San Francisco, California and Seattle, Washington who host workshops and bilingual discussions about aging, caregiving, and end-of-life. We hope to start conversations between generations in cultures where discussions of death and many other topics are often taboo in order to deepen connections and build trust.

Join us in dispelling the taboo of talking about and planning for end-of-life and post-life care among Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) families. We are always looking to grow our network of providers and resources who are experienced with working and connecting with the AAPI community.

Let’s work together to encourage intergenerational healing, education, and conversations about life, death, and beyond!

Who are we?

When Elizabeth and Holly first met at a coffee shop in San Francisco in 2019, they were strangers, but they became friends over a shared experience within their respective Chinese American families: talking about the end of life is an especially taboo subject in our culture.

This meeting turned into a brainstorming session about how to bring these conversations literally to the table for the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. By happy coincidence, there was also an upcoming Reimagine End of Life festival that was taking submissions for events to be part of their program.

Holly and Elizabeth submitted their proposal and the rest is history. They held their first workshop in October 2019. With the onset of the pandemic, they hosted virtual AAPI Table Talks on behalf of Reimagine. Thanks to a grant from the SF Palliative Care Care Work Group, in 2023 they were able to bring Death Over Dim Sum back to San Francisco’s International Hotel Manilatown Center as an in-person workshop.

Holly and Elizabeth welcome attendees of the Death Over Dim Sum workshop in March 2023.
